Hochbunker Barmbeker Straße, Wartime bunker in Winterhude, Hamburg, Germany
The Hochbunker Barmbeker Straße is a reinforced concrete air-raid shelter built with thick walls and minimal windows, designed to withstand bomb blasts and shrapnel during wartime attacks on the city.
Constructed in 1943 during World War II, this bunker provided protection for hundreds of Hamburg residents during aerial bombardments and was later converted into temporary housing during the postwar reconstruction period.
The bunker serves as a physical reminder of Hamburg's wartime resilience and has been preserved as a protected historical monument, representing the city's commitment to remembering its difficult past while adapting to modern needs.
Following extensive renovations between 2015 and 2016, the structure now houses the ONE83 LOFTS residential complex, featuring modern apartments with a penthouse addition while maintaining the original exterior at Barmbeker Straße 183-185.
This bunker underwent one of Hamburg's most notable adaptive reuse projects, transforming from a wartime shelter into temporary postwar housing and eventually into contemporary loft-style apartments that blend historical architecture with modern living.
