Schloss Schönburg, kasteel in Pocking, Duitsland
Schloss Schönburg is a baroque castle in Pocking that was built between 1676 and 1680 on the site of an older medieval fortress. The three-story main building features rounded corner towers on the east side and side sections on the west side, while a covered walkway connects it to a nearby church.
The castle is first documented in 1121 when the lords of Schönburg served as officials of a monastery. The present building was constructed by Baron Georg Adolf von Schönburg after his elevation to the nobility in 1654, replacing the medieval predecessor.
Schloss Schönburg carries in its name the history of the family that shaped the castle since the 12th century and influenced regional life across generations. The baroque architecture and the adjacent chapel show how closely the castle was connected to local traditions and the daily life of the community.
The castle is easily reached on foot from Pocking and lies close to other historical sites in the region, making a visit easy to fit into a day trip. The well-maintained castle grounds with pathways offer the chance to explore the exterior and gardens at leisure.
One of the most remarkable people connected to the castle was Countess Mechtilde, who was born there and later became known as a writer. She married diplomat Karl Max von Lichnowsky and gained recognition for her literary works.
