Saint Mary Church

Saint Mary Church is a rectangular stone building made from fieldstone with a flat wooden ceiling and a brick tower added in the 1830s. The structure sits in the village of Schönkirchen and serves as a landmark on the local cycling route.

The church was built at the end of the 13th century under the support of a local noble and first mentioned in written records in 1294. The tower was added in the 1830s, giving it the shape we see today.

The carved wooden altar inside shows the craftsmanship of northern German baroque art from the 17th century. This piece reflects the artistic skills and religious devotion of the period when it was created.

The church is located on a regional cycling route and has bicycle parking and information boards nearby. Public restroom facilities are available on the adjacent church square for visitors who need them.

On the north side of the building is a family burial chamber from the 17th century with wall anchors carved with two people's initials. This buried space holds a personal connection to the families who worshipped here centuries ago.
