Jakobuskapelle auf dem Bergle

Jakobuskapelle is a pilgrimage chapel built on a hillside overlooking Gengenbach, with views toward the Rhine Valley and surrounding forest landscape. The structure shares the site with the Holy Sepulcher Chapel, which features a baroque burial chamber nearby.

The hilltop location holds Roman origins evidenced by ancient coins discovered on the site, though the present chapel was built in 1681 under Abbot Placidus Thalmann. This construction reflects the religious development of the region during the 17th century.

The chapel displays seven paintings by Ruth Schaumann depicting the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount, connecting this pilgrimage site along the Way of St. James to artistic expression. These works shape the interior and reflect the spiritual meaning visitors seek when stopping here.

The route to the chapel starts from Gengenbach's old town and climbs steadily via marked trails with clear signage throughout. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the ascent is steep and the paths are naturally surfaced.
