Dorfkirche Schartau

Dorfkirche Schartau is a fieldstone church with a distinctive octagonal bell tower and pointed openings in Rochau. The building is constructed from massive fieldstones that form a solid structural core.

The building was constructed around 1205 as a fortified church, serving as a shelter for residents during turbulent times in medieval Saxony-Anhalt. It thus played an important role for the local community in an era of conflict and hardship.

The church displays wooden carvings on its south wall showing religious figures from the medieval period, reflecting the craftsmanship of that time.

The church is easy to reach and located in the village of Rochau where it can be found without difficulty. Visitors should be prepared for changing light conditions, as the interior appears quite dark due to the small medieval windows.

The altar features a handcrafted pulpit from the 17th century created by an artisan from a neighboring town, displaying fine details in woodwork. This pulpit is a rare example of locally produced sacred furniture art that often goes unrecorded.
