Hotel Atlantic Hamburg, Autograph Collection, Grand hotel in St. Georg district, Hamburg, Germany
Hotel Atlantic Hamburg, Autograph Collection, is a grand hotel on the eastern shore of the Outer Alster lake, a short walk from Hamburg's main railway station. The building holds rooms and suites spread across several floors, along with two restaurants that open toward the waterfront.
The hotel opened in 1909 to welcome passengers of the Hamburg America Line, the largest shipping company of its time. After the Second World War, British forces used the building as their headquarters in Hamburg before it returned to its role as a hotel.
The hotel is widely known in Hamburg by the nickname "The White Giant," a name locals gave it because of its white facade on the Alster shore. Today it remains a reference point in the city, visible from the water and recognized even by people who have never stayed there.
The hotel sits on the Alster shore and is easy to reach on foot from the main railway station, making it a convenient starting point for exploring the city center. Waterfront paths along the lake start right outside and are worth walking even if you are not staying there.
The hotel was used as a filming location for the 1996 film "Phenomenon" starring John Travolta, which brought it international attention. Fewer people know that the building has also appeared in other film and television productions over the years because of its recognizable white exterior.
