Schule In der Vahr, Protected heritage school in Vahr, Germany.
Schule In der Vahr is a school complex comprising several pavilion-style buildings spread across the Vahr district grounds. The facility includes classrooms, gymnasium, and administrative areas designed according to open-school architectural principles.
The school buildings were constructed between 1957 and 1963 by architects Max Säume and Günther Hafemann to serve the growing population of the post-war Vahr settlement. The structures were placed under heritage protection in 2022, now recognized as important examples of school architecture from that era.
The school reflects post-war ideals where open classrooms and generous green spaces were meant to support learning in a new community. Visitors can still see today how this design shapes daily school life and social interaction.
The grounds are well integrated into the Vahr residential district and visible from outside, allowing visitors to observe the architecture and green spaces. Best explored on foot, visitors can take time to observe the various pavilion buildings and their spatial arrangement.
The pavilion construction method was an innovative response to the challenge of quickly creating flexible school space for the post-war population. This approach allowed individual buildings to operate independently and be easily reconfigured later if needed.
