Rosskastanien Marschnerstraße, Tree row natural monument in Johannstadt, Dresden, Germany.

The Rosskastanien Marschnerstraße is a protected row of trees on the east side of Marschnerstraße in Johannstadt, Dresden. The mature trees are yellow-flowering Appalachian horse chestnuts (Aesculus flava), about 18 metres tall with crowns around 10 metres across and trunks 1.20 to 1.65 metres in circumference. Younger red-flowering examples of Aesculus pavia stand among them.

Dresden's city council granted the row natural monument status (ND 103) on 10 June 1999. The protection covers each tree's root zone, extending 3 metres from the kerb on the street side and to the crown drip line plus 3 metres on the pavement side. The deciding factor was the rarity in Germany of a street planting combining Aesculus flava and Aesculus pavia. On the same day the council also protected the pink-flowering chestnut avenue on Blüherstraße.

The two species carry names Dresdeners rarely use: the yellow-flowering Appalachian horse chestnut (Aesculus flava) and the red-flowering true pavie (Aesculus pavia), both North American. The row is a street planting, not a park avenue, and separates the pavement from the roadway behind the block marketed as StraßBURG. Mistletoe, common in Dresden, infests both species.

The protected trees stand on the east side of Marschnerstraße between the sidewalk and the road; the row on the west side is not part of the monument. The root protection zone reaches 3 metres from the kerb and 3 metres beyond the crown edge on the footpath side. The SP1 convenience centre faces Straßburger Platz at the southern end by Comeniusstraße.

The old trees are yellow-flowering Appalachian buckeyes (Aesculus flava), joined by younger red-flowering true pavies (Aesculus pavia); both are North American species. The row's protection rests on this pairing, rare in German street planting. Look for mistletoe, common in Dresden, in the crowns.
