Altarme der Prießnitz, Natural monument in Dresden Heath, Germany
Altarme der Prießnitz is a protected natural site in Dresden Heath consisting of two separate areas with oxbow lakes and wetland zones. The water bodies provide habitat for specialized plants and animals in this conservation area.
The site received protection in 1985 to preserve the ecological structures of Dresden Heath. The oxbow lakes formed naturally through the shifting course of the Prießnitz River.
The site functions as an educational resource for local schools and researchers studying wetland ecosystems and regional biodiversity in Saxony.
The site is accessible by foot from Radeberger Landstraße via marked paths and sits about 150 meters northwest of the road. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the trails cross wet ground.
The lakes host rare water plants such as water buttercup and floating liverwort species. The surrounding area is known as habitat for the Spanish Flag butterfly, a distinctive species of this heath region.
