Mainauen bei Sulzbach und Kleinwallstadt, Protected nature reserve in Bavaria, Germany.
Mainauen bei Sulzbach und Kleinwallstadt is a protected nature reserve stretching along the Main River's right bank with riparian woodlands, meadows, and wetland patches. The river creates natural divisions between different habitat types that together occupy approximately 89 hectares of largely undisturbed floodplain landscape.
The riverbanks remained marshy and shifting until the 1800s, when major engineering works were carried out to improve navigation on the Main. Despite these alterations, the area later regained ecological value and became protected for its remaining natural features.
The reserve demonstrates how river landscapes function as interconnected habitats where forests and meadows support diverse wildlife communities. Visitors walking through can observe how different plant species create layers of vegetation that define the character of the floodplain.
Some zones require permits while others offer marked pathways for visitors to explore on foot. Sticking to designated routes helps protect the fragile habitats while allowing safe and respectful access.
The area contains specific biotopes such as 'Kleiner Gries', a wetland woodland with dense vegetation, and an oxbow lake that retains water connections to the main river flow. These remnant features serve as refuges for species adapted to isolated wet conditions.
