Fledermausquartier Brauereikeller Frankfurt, Protected bat habitat in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany
The Fledermausquartier Brauereikeller Frankfurt (Oder) is a former brewery cellar system beneath the city that now protects bats. The underground network consists of several cellar rooms with vaults and maintains stable conditions during the cold months for the animals.
The brewery that owned this cellar system ceased production in 1950. The underground rooms subsequently developed into an important winter shelter for various bat species.
Local citizens formed an initiative in 1989 to prevent the demolition of the structure and establish protective measures for the bat population.
Visitors can explore the cellar system only with a guide or in the company of nature conservationists, as access is limited to protect the bats. Bring appropriate clothing since the underground rooms remain cool and damp throughout the year.
The cellar system hosts particularly large populations of Greater Mouse-eared Bats, a species that is otherwise rare in the region. These animals use the location across multiple winters and return there regularly.
