The former brewery ceased operations in 1950, transforming its cellars into a significant winter shelter for various bat species in Germany.
Local citizens formed an initiative in 1989 to prevent the demolition of the structure and establish protective measures for the bat population.
The facility houses between 1,500 and 2,000 bats annually in its cellar system, which features specific temperature and humidity conditions.
This location represents Germany's largest known hibernation site for the Greater Mouse-eared Bat, with specimens tracked within a 200-kilometer radius.
