Karstadt Berlin Hermannplatz, Department store in Kreuzberg, Germany
Karstadt Berlin Hermannplatz is a large-scale department store at the Kreuzberg intersection spanning nine floors with two underground levels. The structure features a limestone facade and connects directly to the underground train station below.
The original building opened in 1929 as one of the most modern stores of its era. After destruction in 1945, it was reconstructed and reopened in 1951.
The building takes its name from the square it occupies and shapes the neighborhood's character with its commanding presence. Visitors immediately notice how the structure defines the public space surrounding it.
The store sits directly at Hermannplatz underground station and is easily reached from several Berlin districts. The central location makes shopping simple when arriving by public transport.
Two light towers extended the building height to 71 meters, making it the largest and most technologically advanced department store in Europe when it opened. The rooftop was originally designed as a garden for 500 guests where visitors could enjoy musical performances.
