Schleidenhof is a large residential complex in Barmbek-Süd that spans multiple streets and combines red brick with castle-like design touches. The buildings form blocks around shared courtyards, showing how Hamburg's housing was organized for working families at that time.
The worker cooperative 'Produktion' built this complex in 1905 and 1906 to house its members as Hamburg was growing rapidly. The project arose when the city needed housing for thousands of new workers moving to the port and factories.
The name comes from the cooperative that built it to house members and create community. Walking through, you can see how working families in early 1900s Hamburg were meant to live together.
The complex is located in northern Hamburg and is easy to reach by public transport. The streets around it can be explored on foot to see the facades and shared courtyards from different angles and appreciate the layout.
Although it looks like a standard rental block, it was originally an innovative cooperative where residents were not just renters but members of an organization that managed their own housing conditions. This democratic approach to workers housing was unusual for the early 1900s.
