Martinskirche, Protestant church in Möhringen, Germany

Martinskirche in Stuttgart-Möhringen is a neo-Gothic sandstone church rebuilt in 1855 by Christian Friedrich von Leins, with a three-aisled nave of four bays and a choir with a late-Gothic net vault. The tower retains its late-Gothic base and is topped by a cast-iron pyramid made in Wasseralfingen. After near-total destruction in 1944, the interior was rebuilt in 1948–49 with a lower, polygonal wooden ceiling.

A Romanesque predecessor stood on this site until its tower collapsed in 1459. The master builder Hans Böblinger directed the new late-Gothic church, completed in 1464 as dated by two keystones in the choir net vault and lower tower vault. In 1531 the Reformation was introduced here together with Esslingen. The nave was rebuilt in neo-Gothic form by Christian Friedrich von Leins in 1853–1855, destroyed by a bomb in March 1944, and rebuilt under Hans Seytter in 1948–1949.

The church is dedicated to Saint Martin; its consecration took place on 11 November 1855, his feast day. Rudolf Yelin the Younger painted the wooden ceiling of the nave in 1949 with four coloured panels: music-making angels above the organ, six apostles, Christ in a mandorla with the symbols of the four evangelists, and further apostles before the chancel arch. Between 1960 and 1962 Yelin made stained glass for five choir windows showing scenes from the Gospels and Acts.

The church welcomes visitors during regular Protestant services and serves the communities of Möhringen and Fasanenhof districts. Those who want to explore the architecture should check service times to have freedom to walk around.

The two Romanesque columns now at the Spitalhof gate are not the only medieval survivals: the late-Gothic tower base also remained when the nave was rebuilt in 1853–1855. The 1852/1853 tower renewal added a neo-Gothic stone spire with a cast-iron pyramid cast in Wasseralfingen to Leins's plans.
