Alte Niedeck

Alte Niedeck is a castle ruin located at about 385 meters elevation on Kronenberg hill, with foundation remains and wall fragments scattered across the site. Traces of earthen ramparts and ditches still reveal the medieval defensive design.

Built around 1220, the castle served as a residence for the Lords of Niedeck until 1318, when conflict damaged the structure. It formed part of a broader defense network for the region.

The castle reflected how local noble families displayed their power through fortifications that overlooked the surrounding valleys. Today you can still see the simple but sturdy construction methods used in these medieval residential castles.

Access is via a steep forest path, so sturdy footwear and careful footing are essential. Damp conditions and loose ground can make the climb more demanding than expected.

The ruin stands just about 700 meters from the neighboring Hünschen Burg, so these two fortifications formed a connected defense system. Visitors can still sense this strategic closeness and understand how the castles worked together to control the valley.
