Trainkaserne Bischofswerda, Military barracks in Bischofswerda, Germany
Trainkaserne Bischofswerda was a military barracks covering around 40 hectares on the northern edge of the city with multiple buildings and former training grounds. After being repurposed and extensively redeveloped from 2000 onward, most structures were demolished, though the Officers' Casino was preserved.
The barracks was established in 1913 as part of plans to create a garrison town with military training facilities. The site lost its military importance after the Cold War and was acquired by the city in 1998.
The Officers' Casino, a 19th-century building, still shapes how the former military site looks today and now serves as a restaurant. It shows how military architecture became woven into the city's everyday life and continues to draw visitors.
The former barracks is located on the northern edge of the city and parts of it are now accessible to the public, particularly the restaurant building. Visitors should be aware that much of the site is now green space and access to certain areas may be limited.
During the Cold War, the site housed rocket brigades with advanced weapons systems that have now completely disappeared from the city's landscape. This military past is barely visible to visitors today, as most buildings and equipment were removed long ago.
