Mönchstraße 13, Medieval merchant house in Stralsund, Germany
Mönchstraße 13 is a three-story merchant house with a curved gable and Gothic fire walls built in the medieval period. The structure has an arched entrance portal that opens into a spacious hall at its center.
The house was built around 1320 during the Hanseatic League period and stands among the oldest merchant structures on the Baltic coast. In the 20th century it faced collapse but received a major restoration in the 1990s.
The building displays a blend of Gothic, Baroque, and Classical elements across its rooms, reflecting different periods of use and renovation. Visitors can see how these styles layer over one another on the walls and ceilings.
The building sits in Stralsund's old town and is easy to reach on foot. Be aware that interior stairs are narrow and floors may be uneven in places.
Inside the house remains a working wooden hoist mechanism from medieval times, among the oldest functioning examples in Northern Germany. This active device reveals how medieval merchants lifted heavy cargo to upper floors.
