Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos", International airport in Spata-Artemida Municipality, Greece
Athens International Airport is a commercial traffic hub in Spata-Artemida Municipality, roughly 20 kilometers east of the capital. The site includes passenger halls, baggage claim areas, and waiting zones divided into sections for arrivals and departures.
The facility began operations in March 2001, taking over from the older Ellinikon airport south of the city. Its construction was accelerated to accommodate the surge of international visitors arriving for the 2004 Olympic Games.
The name honors a reformist statesman from the early 20th century whose work still resonates in the public memory of the country. Travelers walking through the halls encounter display cases showing objects unearthed during the construction of the runways and buildings.
Travelers reach downtown Athens via Metro Line 3, which departs directly from the terminal and takes roughly 40 minutes. Alternative options include several bus lines, the suburban railway, and taxis, depending on your destination and time of day.
The main building divides internally into two separate zones: Hall A serves flights outside the Schengen area, while Hall B processes connections within the European Union and domestic routes. This split allows faster passport checks and baggage handling based on where passengers are traveling.
