Antikythera, Remote island in southern Aegean Sea, Greece

Antikythera is a small island in the southern Aegean Sea between Crete and Kythira, marked by steep cliffs and secluded beaches. The terrain is rocky and exposed, with only a few sheltered coves scattered along the coastline.

In 1900, sponge divers discovered an ancient shipwreck off its coast containing the Antikythera Mechanism, an astronomical calculator from the 2nd century BCE. This discovery transformed our understanding of ancient technology.

The handful of residents practice traditional fishing and small-scale farming as their primary way of life. Daily routines here revolve around the seasons and the rhythm of the sea.

The island is accessible only by ferry from the mainland, with limited connections that vary by season. Lodging options are sparse and concentrated in the small settlement of Potamos, so advance booking is advisable.

The island harbors one of Europe's largest colonies of Eleonora's falcon and serves as a key observation point for bird migration. Ornithologists come here to study this rare raptor species during its breeding season.
