Alonnisos Marine Park

The park extends over 2,260 square kilometers, incorporating Alonnisos island, six smaller islands, and twenty-two uninhabited islets in the Aegean Sea.

The establishment of this marine sanctuary began in the 1970s when zoologist Thomas Schultze-Westrum identified the ecological value during research expeditions.

Local fishing communities actively supported the park's creation in the 1980s, recognizing the importance of preserving marine resources for future generations.

Visitors access the park by boat from Alonnisos, with opportunities for swimming, diving, and wildlife observation in designated public areas.

The protected waters contain 300 fish species and serve as a refuge for the Mediterranean monk seal, with numerous underwater archaeological sites.
