Asclepeion of Kos, Ancient healing sanctuary in Kos, Greece
The Asclepeion stretches across three terraces on a hillside, featuring temples, altars, and medical treatment areas connected by marble staircases.
Excavations by German archaeologist Rudolf Herzog in 1902 revealed surgical instruments, statues, and inscriptions dating from the 4th century BCE.
The sanctuary served as both a medical center and philosophical school where Hippocrates established principles of medicine still relevant today.
Located 3.5 kilometers southwest of Kos town, the archaeological site maintains regular visiting hours and provides educational guided tours.
The temple complex incorporated water from natural springs into healing treatments, combining medical practices with religious ceremonies in designated spaces.
