Asclepeion of Kos, Ancient healing sanctuary in Kos, Greece

The Asclepeion is an ancient healing sanctuary and hospital built on three terraced levels rising above the landscape, connected by wide stone staircases. Column fragments, foundation walls, and remains of altars mark each level, while trees provide shade between the ruins.

The complex arose in the 4th century BCE after the death of Hippocrates and grew over several centuries into a major medical center. German archaeologists uncovered instruments, statues, and inscribed stones from 1902 onward that document treatment methods.

The name honors Asklepios, Greek god of healing, whose temple dominated the upper terrace. Patients traveled from across the ancient world to sleep in special chambers, hoping for dreams that would guide their cure.

The site lies about 2.2 miles (3.5 km) southwest of Kos town and is reached by an access road leading to a parking area. Climbing through the levels can be tiring on hot days, so a visit in the morning or late afternoon works better.

Spring water flowed through the entire site in basins and channels, used for both ritual purification and treatment procedures. This combination of water, prayer, and medicine formed the core of the therapeutic philosophy here.
