Church of the Holy Trinity, Athens
Church of the Holy Trinity, Athens, Byzantine church on Filellinon Street, Athens, Greece.
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a Byzantine church located on Filellinon Street in central Athens with a commanding dome rising above an octagonal base. The building displays classical Byzantine design with a cross-in-square floor plan and incorporates decorative patterns on its exterior walls.
The church was founded in 1031 during the Byzantine period as a small chapel in the city. Major reconstruction took place between 1850 and 1855, transforming it into the large Orthodox structure visible today.
The church serves the Russian Orthodox community in Athens and reflects a blend of Eastern and Western artistic traditions in its interior. Visitors can see how this space has remained an important gathering place for Orthodox worship and cultural observance over many decades.
The church is centrally located in Athens and easy to reach if you want to explore the Orthodox heritage of the city. Keep in mind this is an active place of worship, so dress respectfully and avoid disturbing services.
The exterior walls feature pseudo-Kufic decorative patterns, a design element that reflects Oriental influences in Byzantine architecture. These artistic details remain clearly visible and give the building a distinctive character not found in many other Orthodox churches in the city.
