Petani Beach, Sandy beach on Paliki peninsula in Kefalonia, Greece.
Petani Beach is a sandy beach on the Paliki peninsula of the Greek island of Kefalonia, set inside a curved bay flanked by tall limestone cliffs. The sand is pale and fine, and the water shifts from light turquoise near the shore to deep blue further out.
Petani Beach was first awarded the Blue Flag in 2018, a European certification given to beaches that meet water quality and management standards. The beach has kept this certification every year since then.
Two tavernas sit right on the beach and serve fresh seafood and Greek food, so visitors can eat local food a few steps from the water. This is a common way people spend their time here, eating and watching the sea at the same table.
Getting to the beach means driving down a steep and winding road with tight hairpin turns, so it is worth going slowly and carefully. Parking is available near the tavernas and in a paid lot at the top of the road.
The seabed drops sharply just a few steps from the shore, which is unusual for a sandy bay of this size. This sudden depth is what gives the water its strong color contrast between the pale edge and the deep blue further out.
