Haghios Andreas church

Haghios Andreas church stands within the Syngros estate, surrounded by pines, cypresses, and olive trees near central Athens. The structure combines religious function with a quiet setting tucked within a private property.

German architect Ernesto Chiller, a student of Theophilus Hansen, designed this Orthodox church in Gothic style during the early modern period. The building emerged when European architectural influences were shaping church construction across Greece.

Inside, the church features an unusual arrangement where Saint Andrew's image occupies the space typically reserved for Saint John the Baptist. This distinctive iconographic choice shapes the worship experience for those who enter.

This structure is the only Orthodox church in Greece built following Gothic architectural principles, making it an exception among traditional Byzantine designs. Its Gothic appearance stands out distinctly among most other Orthodox churches across the country.
