Clock Tower of Xanthi
Clock Tower of Xanthi, Ottoman-era clock tower in central square, Xanthi, Greece.
The clock tower stands 20 meters high with a prominent position in the central square, featuring Ottoman architectural elements and a large timepiece at its upper section.
Built in 1859 by Hadji Emin Agha, the structure initially served as part of the market mosque complex until Bulgarian forces partially destroyed it during World War II.
The clock tower represents the multicultural heritage of Xanthi, where Greek Orthodox Christians and three different Muslim communities have shared the urban landscape for generations.
The central location of the tower makes it an efficient meeting point for visitors, with the Saturday bazaar taking place in the surrounding area.
In 1972, the local Muslim community successfully prevented the planned demolition of the tower during the Regime of the Colonels through organized protests.
