Portaikos Bridge, Stone bridge in Pyli, Greece

The Portaikos Bridge extends 65 meters across the Portaikos River with a single semicircular arch constructed from limestone and sandstone blocks.

Metropolitan of Larissa Saint Bessarion commissioned the construction of this bridge in 1514 as the sole connection between Thessaly and Epirus until 1936.

The bridge represents Ottoman engineering techniques and traditional Greek craftsmanship through its rubble masonry construction and hewn sandstone ledge design.

Located at the 22nd kilometer of the Trikala-Arta national road, this pedestrian bridge underwent restoration works in 1968, 1983, and 2006.

Standing as the second-largest pre-20th century bridge in Thessaly, its main arch spans 29 meters with a walking path width of 2.1 meters.
