Abaton of Epidaurus, Ancient healing sanctuary dormitory in Epidaurus, Greece
The Abaton functions as a long portico structure within the Sanctuary of Asclepius, featuring stone columns and dedicated sleeping areas for patients.
During the 4th century BC, the Abaton served as the primary incubation hall where patients slept to receive healing messages through dreams from Asclepius.
Patients in ancient Greece traveled to this dormitory believing that Asclepius would appear during their sleep to diagnose and treat their medical conditions.
The archaeological remains of the Abaton stand at coordinates 37.598694, 23.07405, within the larger Sanctuary complex in the Epidavros Municipality.
Inscriptions found at the site record numerous accounts of patients who experienced divine healing interventions while sleeping in the Abaton chambers.
