Cheimarrou Tower, Hellenistic fortified tower in Naxos, Greece.
Cheimarrou Tower is a circular marble defensive structure on the island of Naxos. The structure features a square outer wall, arrow slits for defense, and an entrance door on the southern side.
The tower was built between the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE and served military purposes. Its interior extended across three floors supported by wooden beams, traces of which remain visible on the walls today.
The tower demonstrates how island residents protected themselves against pirates and monitored their coastline. The massive stone structure was a symbol of power and control over the surrounding territories.
The tower sits between Mount Zas and the sea in southeastern Naxos. A marked walking path leads from the village of Filoti to the site and is relatively easy to navigate.
The site was built directly above a marble quarry whose stone provided the building materials. This location reveals how the Greeks cleverly used their resources and placed construction sites near their stone sources.
