Saint Mary Koumbelidiki

Saint Mary Koumbelidiki is an Orthodox church with a square floor plan and a prominent circular dome rising higher than buildings of similar size in the region. The structure displays the hallmarks of medieval Byzantine architecture with its thick stone walls and characteristic vaulting.

The building was constructed between the 9th and 11th centuries as an expression of Byzantine devotion in the region. It sustained damage during the war in the 1940s but underwent complete restoration afterward.

The painted scenes inside show the life of Christ, saints, and the Virgin Mary displayed across the walls and entryway. These images let visitors today experience the religious visual language that shaped medieval spirituality.

The building is open to visitors year-round and offers a calm space to explore medieval architecture at your own pace. Wearing comfortable shoes helps, as the stone floors and interior layout reward slow, careful looking.

The representation of the Trinity in the entryway arch is among the earliest examples of this visual form in Byzantine art, dating to the 13th century. This rare visual record shows how artists worked to make an abstract theological idea visible to worshippers.
