Lake Smokovo, reservoir in Greece
Lake Smokovo is a reservoir on the slopes of the Agrafa mountains in the Sofades Municipality. The dam holding back the water stands 104 meters (341 feet) high and stretches 450 meters (1,476 feet) across, serving as a key water source for farming in the surrounding plains and nearby communities.
The reservoir began as a major dam construction project that started in 1981 and was completed in 1994. It officially opened in 2002 and has since become an essential water source for regional agriculture and hydroelectric power generation.
The area has no major facilities, so visitors should bring water, snacks, and sturdy shoes for walking around the shoreline. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the most open and peaceful experience around the reservoir.
The reservoir includes a hydropower installation that generates electricity from the flow of water, serving both agricultural and energy needs simultaneously. This dual purpose makes it a vital part of the region's infrastructure beyond just water supply.
