The Temple of Poseidon rises 60 meters above the Aegean Sea on Cape Sounion, featuring marble Doric columns that form a rectangular structure.
The temple was reconstructed between 444 and 440 BCE under Pericles after Persian forces destroyed the original structure during their invasion in 480 BCE.
Ancient mariners used this temple as a navigation point, while making offerings to Poseidon for protection during their sea journeys across the Aegean waters.
Visitors can reach the archaeological site by regular bus services from Athens, with operating hours from 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM throughout the year.
The temple walls contain inscriptions from numerous historical figures, including the signature of English poet Lord Byron carved during his travels in 1810.
