Thoricus

Thoricus is an archaeological site in the Lavreotiki region with remains of an ancient theater, defensive structures, and religious buildings. The site spreads across a hillside with walls, towers, gateways, and staircases from various periods, many of which are still visible today.

The settlement began around 4500 BC and grew especially during antiquity when nearby silver mines brought wealth to the region. Occupation ended in the 1st century BC, marking the close of this place's long history spanning thousands of years.

The archaeological complex shows how different functions were woven together: a temple to Demeter stands near workshops for metalworking, and burial grounds from various periods dot the site. As you walk through, you notice how closely craft, worship, and burial practices existed side by side.

The site is open to explore and requires good footwear for walking over uneven terrain and historic ruins. Bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the hillside offers little shelter from the sun.

The theater here is one of the world's oldest known theater buildings, dating from the 6th century BC. Its elongated design differs sharply from the round theaters seen elsewhere across Greece.
