Court of Athens, Ancient court complex in Athens, Greece

The Court of Athens is an ancient court complex dating to the late 5th century BC, located in the Agora of Athens, Greece. It consists of three structures arranged around an open triangular space: two rectangular halls and an open colonnade of eleven columns.

The complex was built in the last quarter of the 5th century BC, when Athenian democracy was shaping its institutions. Earlier reforms by Solon had opened jury service to men of all social classes, not just the wealthy.

The complex stood at the heart of the Agora, the main gathering place of the city. Ordinary citizens served as jurors there, making the courts a place where public life and justice were closely connected.

The ruins are part of the Athens Agora archaeological site and are accessible through its main entrance. Visiting in the morning gives more room to walk around and take in the remains at a comfortable pace.

Excavations at the site turned up water clocks used to time speeches during trials, showing how strictly proceedings were managed. Bronze ballots and juror tokens were also found, giving a detailed picture of how the voting process actually worked.
