Albert

Albert is a commune in the Somme department in northern France, located roughly 21 kilometers from Amiens. The town centers on its distinctive basilica topped with a gilded statue and features streets laid out according to a planned design with residential areas and a market square.

The town suffered severe destruction during World War I and was subsequently rebuilt following a coordinated urban plan. The basilica was reconstructed in its original form and has anchored the town's character ever since.

The golden statue atop the basilica was damaged by shelling during the war and tilted to one side, remaining in this angled position as a symbol of resilience. When the building was rebuilt, the statue was repositioned to stand upright, making it a visible marker of recovery and renewal.
