The Nordheim-Strasbourg transmitter is a 280-meter tall structure perched on Stephansberg hill, located roughly 21 kilometers northwest of Strasbourg. The facility broadcasts digital television across multiple channels and also carries FM radio signals and mobile phone networks serving the surrounding area.
The transmitter was built in the 1960s as one of France's early television broadcast sites. A modernized tower later replaced the original installation and marked the shift from analog to digital transmission technology.
The transmitter brought television broadcasts to isolated communities across Alsace, allowing rural residents to watch the same programs as city dwellers. This created a shared viewing experience that connected people across the region.
The site sits on elevated ground with clear views across the surrounding landscape and is visible from various nearby roads. The facility itself is not open to the public, but the structure can be easily spotted from a distance.
The current antenna was erected in 2003 to replace a 130-meter tall mast from an earlier era. This swap was a significant step in modernizing broadcast technology across the entire region.
