Lagrasse, Administrative division in Occitanie region, France

Lagrasse is a small village in the Occitanie region that stretches along the Orbieu river valley at the foothills of the Pyrenees. The settlement features medieval stone buildings and a Benedictine abbey that anchors its center.

The abbey was founded in 783 and quickly became an important cultural center in medieval times. The settlement grew around this religious institution and developed as a trading and pilgrimage hub.

The village takes its name from the Orbieu river, which has shaped its identity for centuries. Residents and visitors move through narrow streets and gather by the water for daily life and celebrations.

The best time to visit is during quieter months when the narrow streets are not crowded. You can explore the area on foot and should wear comfortable shoes to navigate the cobblestone paths easily.

The abbey holds a remarkable collection of manuscripts that document thousands of years of history. These precious writings make the building a quiet witness to the preservation of knowledge.
