Pont-Saint-Esprit, Medieval commune in Gard, France
Pont-Saint-Esprit sits along the Rhône River in the Gard department, roughly 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Avignon. The old quarter lies between the riverbank and the hills to the east, with narrow lanes and buildings built from ochre stone.
The stone bridge across the Rhône was started in 1265 under Jehan de Thianges and took 44 years to finish. The town adopted its current name after the bridge was completed in 1309, honoring the Holy Spirit brotherhood that supported the work.
The Maison des Chevaliers houses the Musée d'Art Sacré, which displays religious artifacts, precious metalwork, relics, and Cretois icons from medieval times.
Local markets sell regional products such as Côtes du Rhône wines, fresh produce, and handmade goods throughout the week. Most shops close for a few hours around midday, especially during warm summer months.
Michel Bouvier, a carpenter from here, left for America in the 18th century. His descendants include Jacqueline Kennedy, who became First Lady of the United States several generations later.
