Montfort-l'Amaury

Montfort-l'Amaury is a small commune with stone buildings and narrow streets set against rolling hills at the edge of Rambouillet Forest. The town preserves its medieval character through traditional architecture and an old-world street layout.

A fortress was established here in 996 under King Robert II and later became a stronghold of the Montfort family. The Montforts strengthened their position in the early 11th century by building defensive structures.

Composer Maurice Ravel spent his final decades here, leaving traces that still shape how locals think about their town's cultural identity. His presence brings music into the everyday story of this place.

Take time to explore the steep, uneven streets on foot, as they are narrow and require sturdy shoes for comfortable walking. The town center makes a good starting point, as the main places of interest are reachable by walking from there.

Medieval tower ruins rise above the town and remain clearly visible, offering views over the surrounding landscape. These ruins silently remind visitors of the strategic importance this place once held.
