Morteau, Administrative commune in Doubs, France
Morteau is an administrative commune in Doubs located in a valley of the Doubs River at about 770 meters elevation. The town sits near the Swiss border in a mountainous region.
The name Morteau first appeared in official records in 1105 when Benedictine monks arrived to establish settlements in the mountainous region. The town took on its present form during the Renaissance when stone buildings were constructed.
The Château Pertusier and city hall from the late 16th century display Renaissance architecture in the town center. These buildings shape how the historic core looks and feels today.
A train station connects the town to larger regional destinations and offers transportation for cross-border workers heading to Switzerland. The location near the border makes visiting nearby places on the other side relatively straightforward.
The Black Book, kept in city hall, contains historical records spanning 1188 to 1514. This precious document survived by being hidden in Switzerland during turbulent times.
