The pentagon-shaped citadel features five ramparts with bastions, powder magazines, and barracks designed to accommodate 1,500 soldiers within its stone walls.
Constructed between 1668 and 1672 under Louis XIV's reign, architect Vauban created this fortress as part of France's northern defense system.
The Mur des Fusillés memorial within the citadel grounds commemorates 218 resistance members executed during World War II between 1941 and 1944.
The citadel opens its gates to visitors through Boulevard du Général de Gaulle, offering guided tours and walking paths around the fortification structures.
The fortress earned the name 'la belle inutile' because it remained unattacked throughout its military service, preserving its original 17th-century structures.
