La Treille

La Treille is a neighborhood situated on hillsides at the edge of Marseille, built around a historic village core with stone houses arranged along narrow winding streets. The area remains largely residential with a mixed character where older structures sit alongside more recent buildings.

Settlement in this area began in the late 15th century when families from surrounding regions established themselves here. The location gradually transformed from a small rural hamlet into a recognized village before being absorbed into expanding Marseille.

The village cemetery contains the grave of French writer Marcel Pagnol, who depicted the area in his novels and films about Provence.

The neighborhood is accessible by Marseille's public transportation system or on foot from nearby areas. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the streets and pathways are steep in many sections.

A public fountain in the central area served as a filming location for a notable French film adaptation in the 1950s. This site remains an understated detail that many visitors overlook despite its connection to regional cinema history.
