Gif-sur-Yvette extends across 11.60 square kilometers in the Vallée de Chevreuse, with the Yvette River flowing through residential and forested areas.
The territory evolved from a Neolithic settlement to host a Benedictine abbey from the 12th century until the 18th century, marking its early development.
The Église Saint-Rémi, built in the 12th century, combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements, receiving monument status recognition in 1938.
Two stations on the RER B line connect the commune to Paris, with trains running regularly from early morning until late evening.
The French National Centre for Scientific Research established a facility in 1946, transforming the commune into an international center for scientific studies.
