Évian-les-Bains, Thermal spa town in Haute-Savoie, France
Évian-les-Bains sits on the southern shore of Lake Geneva in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The municipality spreads across several levels from the waterfront to the wooded slopes above town.
A nobleman discovered a spring with particular water in 1790 while traveling through town and drinking from a fountain. The first bottling plant opened in 1826 and gradually made the mineral water internationally known.
The Cachat spring in the town center flows freely from a small pavilion and can be filled by anyone. The water has been bottled commercially for two centuries and has given the town worldwide recognition.
The town can be explored on foot, with walking paths along the lake and through the parks. Swimming in the lake is possible at public beaches during summer.
The gardens along the shore feature rare plant species that thrive in the mild microclimate of the lake. Some palms and Mediterranean plants grow here despite the alpine surroundings.
