Pleyben is a small commune in the Finistère department of Brittany, centered around the parish enclosure of Saint-Germain church. The enclosure brings together a church, a large calvary, an ossuary, a cemetery, and a decorative gate, all enclosed by a low stone wall.
Construction of the Pleyben parish enclosure began in the 1500s and was completed in the 1700s, built by local communities using stone from the surrounding area. In 2022, Brittany formally began the process of seeking UNESCO recognition for its parish enclosures.
The parish enclosure is the heart of the town and the best starting point for a visit on foot. In summer, volunteer guides offer free tours of the enclosure and explain the details of the church and calvary.
The calvary of Pleyben is considered the largest in Brittany and sits on top of a wide archway. Its stone carvings depict scenes from the life of Jesus, including the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection.
