Canal d'Orléans, Historic waterway in Centre-Val de Loire, France

The Canal d'Orleans extends 78 kilometers through the Loiret department, connecting the Loire River with the Canal du Loing and Canal de Briare.

Construction began in 1676 when timber merchant Robert Mahieux received authorization to create a 28-kilometer canal for wood transportation to Montargis.

The canal's infrastructure includes 27 locks, numerous gates, and pumping stations that demonstrate French engineering methods from the 17th century.

Three functioning locks operate at the Orleans section across 19 kilometers, while four working locks exist on the opposite 14-kilometer stretch.

The canal's towpath has transformed into a cycling trail, allowing visitors to observe the historical water management systems and restored locks.
