Armorica, Geographic region in northwestern France
Armorica is a coastal territory in northwestern France situated between the Seine and Loire rivers. The area stretches along the Atlantic Ocean and covers parts of what is now Brittany and western Normandy.
During the Roman period the territory was part of the province of Gallia Lugdunensis and inhabited by Celtic tribes such as the Veneti. In the 5th and 6th centuries many settlers arrived from the British Isles.
The region received numerous British settlers in the 5th and 6th centuries, leading to the establishment of settlements named after British territories.
The area sits at roughly 48 degrees north latitude and 1 degree west longitude. Visitors will find traces of the region in place names and historic sites along the Atlantic coast.
The name comes from Gaulish words meaning 'place in front of the sea' and refers to its position facing the Atlantic. This ancient designation still appears in regional identity and references to the coast.
