Souillac

Souillac sits along the Dordogne River at 221 meters elevation, surrounded by limestone plateaus within the historic Haut-Quercy region in southwestern France.

The settlement originated around 909 when Benedictine monks from Aurillac established an abbey, which shaped the development of the town through medieval times.

The Abbey Church of Sainte Marie, completed in 1145, displays Romanesque architecture and contains carved capitals depicting biblical scenes and medieval life.
