Cimetière de Charonne, Historic cemetery in 20th arrondissement, France
Cimetière de Charonne is a cemetery in the 20th arrondissement of Paris that surrounds the Church of Saint-Germain-de-Charonne. Within its approximately 0.41 hectares, about 650 graves are arranged across 41 different sections.
This cemetery kept its original location despite an 1804 decree that banned burials inside the city walls. It remains one of the last Parisian cemeteries that stands directly next to a parish church.
The tombs display different artistic styles that reflect changes in French burial customs over time. You can see bronze sculptures and detailed stonework that show how people expressed their values through these monuments.
The cemetery is located on Rue de Bagnolet and is easily accessible by public transportation. The compact size makes it possible to explore the entire space in about an hour.
The tomb of Bègue Magloire, who was Robespierre's secretary, lies here and is marked by a notable bronze sculpture from 1833. This grave connects the cemetery's history to a significant moment during the French Revolution.
